The Statutes of Liberty

Ah yes. The Statutes of Liberty. What else is there to say about this motley band of freedom fighters? Riffs. Theatrics. Righteous indignation with guitar solos. Buffestalo in band form. Seasoned Buffestalo-goers will recall their debut at the inaugural Buffestalo in the form of four revolutionaries on a sod truck. Well they've been spreading the gospel and swelling the ranks, and their stage show now includes as many as ten people, three guitars, and more percussion instruments than you can identify. If you're not watching the Statutes on the Fourth of July, you'd better start questioning your patriotism and reevaluating some of your life decisions.

The Temporary Name is now The Temporary States.

Hey, they said it was temporary...

Statutes of Liberty singer/guitarists Derrick Freeman and Cory Hance have joined forces with transplanted Californian bassist/singer Ian Capilouto and hard-hitting drummer and Phoenix, AZ music scene veteran Ian Galloway to form the Temporary States. Drawing on their collective love of classic-rock crunch, college-rock jangle, 3-minute pop songs, punk rock and shoegaze, the Temporary States wear their hearts on their sleeve, put their pants on one leg at a time, and write songs that are fresh and new, yet sound haunting and familiar.

Buffestalo welcomes the new band with familiar faces to the treehouse stage to open Bu4stalo!

Penthouse Sweets return for Bu4stalo!

"Ragged", "loose", "ramshackle", "energetic", and "smart"... these are the descriptors you get when you read just about anything regarding Chicago's Penthouse Sweets. Well who doesn't like that? The Sweets brought all these qualities to Buffestalo's stage last year and Buffestalo is very happy to bring them back to the treehouse stage for more smart, catchy, sing along power pop in 2011!

We Repel Each Other to make their Buffestalo debut!

We Repel Each Other has been bringing their smart assed blistering noise terror to Chicago and its environs for a relatively short time, but in that time, they've been playing every rock dive, rooftop, and shithole that dares allow them to have the stage. Buffestalo is happy to invite them to scare the shit out of you while tapping into your involuntary groove reflexes.

Resistance is stupid.

Bu4stalo to feature Central Waters craft brews!

Buffestalo is proud to announce that we'll be featuring some new Wisconsin craft beers on tap this year. Central Waters Brewing Company, based in Amherst, Wisconsin, a straight shot up Route 22 from Montello, has been gracious enough to offer us a great deal on two of their favories - Glacial Trail IPA, an excellent, hopppy summer pale ale, and their newest seasonal release, a Belgian golden ale, which I'm personally looking very forward to trying.

Look for these at the Flying Squirrel treehouse bar and on the back patio at Bu4stalo!

A huge thank you to Elina!

Despite opting to stay home from Buffestalo this year and concentrate on creating an heir to the Salsa Millionaire fortune, Elina has "sponsored" Buffestalo again. We will be featuring Miller Lite, Miller High Life, Leinenkugel's Summer Shandy and Leinenkugel's Sunset Wheat on tap in the Miller refrigerated keg trailer. Be sure to thank Elina when you see her for helping keep Buffestalo cheap and never thirsty.

Please drink responsibly.

Buffalonomics

Allright folks, let's get this little bit of unpleasantness out of the way, shall we? Buffestalo costs money. We strive to provide the best value for your summer entertainment dollar that we possibly can, and we definitely feel that we have accomplished that to date. We still, however, incur a significant loss every year. This is not a complaint - we love this fest tremendously and are happy with every single aspect of it since its inception, but we are trying to get this thing as close to being cost neutral as possible. We will never put Buffestalo on for profit.

Just to give you an idea, here are of some of the many things that are included in your attendance fee: mosquito spraying, port-a-potty rental, propane gas for the grills, boat gas, fireworks, PA rental for the bands, beer and alcohol (we have swung some significant contributions in this area, which I'll elaborate on later) decorations such as lights, torches, flags, and signage (much of which is destroyed every year), a cleaning crew to come through afterwards, and of course, the one thing we cannot seem to have enough of - FOOD.

Last year we spent many hours shopping for food, going on additional food runs, doing food prep, and cooking, and it always went as fast as it hit the table, in many cases before the people prepping or cooking the food had an opportunity to eat at all.

So here's what it comes down to. We will be charging a $40 attendance fee this year, for every adult who attends, regardless of when you come and go. For that fee, we will cover all of the above, to the best of our ability for the duration of Saturday, July 2nd, and Sunday, July 3rd. This is just slightly more than we asked for last year. Here's one significant difference for this year, however. We will provide the pig roast on Saturday as part of this fee. Beyond that all food will be bring your own. There will be grills available 24/7 and we should have ample ability to refrigerate food that people bring. As hosts, we ourselves will bring some additional food to prepare and share, but we ask that every single person who comes, bring something to eat and ideally to share. There is a grocery store about seven miles from the site of the party, and if you like, you can buy provisions there, but please plan to contribute in this regard. We truly feel this will be the easiest and most cost effective way of feeding the masses from everyone's perspective.

Feedback welcomed in the comments.

Buffestalo Pig Roast!

This year we are excited to announce the first ever Buffestalo Pig Roast! We will be serving the roast beauty beginning at 4:00 PM on Saturday, July 2nd. We'll be serving roast turkey at the same time for those averse to the swine for...whatever reason. All meat from this roast will be offered as part of the Buffestalo attendance fee (more on that soon) but sides and all accompaniments are BYOB. The Buffestalo hosts will most likely whip up a few things to go along with it, but please bring sides, breads, and vegetables to go around. Anything leftover will be available throughout the rest of Buffestalo, but who knows how much will be leftover or how long it will last?

Bu4stalo is coming!!!

Hello everyone, long time no see! Do I say that every year? I think I might say that every year. Some of you are probably like 'I see you regularly man, what are you talking about?' That's because these blog posts are written from the perspective of Buffestalo. As if he was a dude. A dude who hasn't seen you since last year, and who misses you, dearly.

This year marks the 4th consecutive year of Buffestalo's existence, making this...wait for it...Bu4stalo! Yes! Let's make this word even more difficult to pronounce!

So, for the uninitiated, here's the rundown:

Buffestalo is a celebration of the 4th of July, the outdoors, rock and roll, the great state of Wisconsin, and all that's right with America. It's officially a two-day event, taking place this year on Saturday, July 2nd and Sunday, July 3rd. We are situated on the north shore of Buffalo Lake, just east of Montello, WI, and you can find directions here. There is a house on the property, and guests are welcome to access the house for use of the kitchen, bathrooms, and bar, but unless you've made arrangements with us directly for a bedroom, guests are expected to sleep elsewhere. The majority of Buffestalo attendees pitch tents in 'tent city' on the property, for the duration of the event, but there are cabins for rent at the neighboring Ox Creek Campground and several motels within a few miles. Keep in mind that if you do make arrangements for a motel that you will have to drive there in near total darkness in an area abundant with wildlife and a police force that is surprisingly present for a rural area, so please plan accordingly. We strongly suggest you stay at tent city and don't sweat it.

Buffestalo is conceived as a fully interactive event with attendees contributing to all aspects of the festivities including live musical performance, screening of short films, preparation of food and drink, and all aspects of maintenance and organization. This year we are anticipating a lineup of no fewer than six (6!) bands, as well as contributions in both film and theater. The general schedule will be for music and fireworks on Saturday, with some additional live music and theater setting the stage (so to speak) for Filmfestalo at sundown on Sunday. All of this is in addition to a multitude of other activities including boating, fishing, a multi-story treehouse, an outdoor foosball theater, and all of your favorite traditional outdoor barbeque games.

The official lineup of bands, details on the attendance fee, and sign up process for various contributions and chores will be forthcoming very shortly, so please keep your eyes on this blog and become a fan of our new Facebook page for updates. I'll actually post status updates on Facebook with links back here for long form content, so that's the best way to stay informed.

That's it for now folks - get excited!
